Where have all the Fireflies Gone?

We keep hearing folks ask  “Where have all the fireflies gone? There were everywhere when we were kids.” Then they tell similar stories of mayonnaise jars with holes in the lids and how much joy they got from the whole experience. The insect guys at The Museum of Science in Boston have set up a Citizen Firefly Watch for the summer to see if there has been an actual decrease in the population (besides the mayonnaise jar losses, that is). You can log on to the site at www.mos.org/fireflywatch/  and see the progress or join in yourself. You’ll learn they aren’t flies at all, they’re beetles. But they’ve always been lightning bugs around here.
