On the 1st-6th Day of Christmas…
Holiday magic always starts with the tree lighting ceremonies and parades. The City of Charleston will light its 60′ Tree of Lights at Marion Square at 4:30 on the 6th. Afterwards, stroll down to watch the Parade of Boats wind through the Harbor. These events are FREE. If you’re in North Charleston on the 6th, the Park Circle Tree Lighting will be at 4:30. Daniel Island’s festival will be at the Family Circle Tennis Center all day. Folly Beach’s Parade will be on the 13th-don’t forget the bridge will close at 1PM on and off the island. Summerville will celebrate with a parade on the 14th at 2pm. Isle of Palms gets a jump on everyone with a ceremony on the 4th. FREE.
Also, on the 4th look for the 12th Annual Holiday Book Signing at the Historic Preservation Society from 5-8pm at their storefront on King Street. Then stroll over to Charleston Cooks at 6:30 to watch the Lee Brothers work on recipes from their cookbook in progress. Learn how cookbooks are made and sample some goodies. And there’s the Evening with Sarah Amos, renowned goldsmith and jewelry designer. A reception will be held from 5-8:30 at Helen Fox Fine Art.
Gallery Row will follow suit the same evening with Broad Street Bling. The galleries will be featuring jewelry artisans from all over the country to bring the best of the bling to you for the holidays.
After being dazzled by those offerings, stroll the French Quarter where 40 different galleries will displaying art in all forms including music.
It kid’s time on the 6th, so find a child and visit the Charleston Museum for the 10 am showing of The Polar Express. Or on Saturdays before Christmas join the Executive Pastry Chef at the Market Pavilion Hotel for a hands on “Cookie Camp” for the kids. For those over 14, the Old Santee Canal Park will teach the making of a Lowcountry centerpiece, the Colonial Apple Tree from 1-3pm.
The 6th also marks the 5th Annual Shopping with Friends. Over 120 Red Ribbon Retailers will give 10% of every dollar to Lowcountry Aids.
We’ve already talked about the Parade of Boats, but Charleston Harbor Resort is hosting its 3rd Annual Oyster Roast to toast the boats as they pass. The Yorktown boasts the “Best Seat in the House” party for the boat parade.
For an evening of peace in the midst of the rush-The Citadel’s Christmas Candlelight Service for the Lowcountry at 7:30p on the 6th,7th and 8th. The hour long program is FREE and open to the public.
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra Gospel Choir will ring in the season with the Symphony in a gala evening on the 6th at the Gaillard.
From 6-8pm on the 5th and the 12th, you can celebrate the season with a special Christmas 1860 Candlelight Tour of the Edmondson-Alston House, one of the first homes on High Battery. The Joseph Manigault House will be dressed the 6th-31st with live plant decorations typical of the 19th century. The Charleston Garden Club will be decorating.
