June Family Fun in Charleston

       We’re in the thick of tourist season here in the Lowcountry and the price of gas keep isn’t keeping them home. Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto are midway through their run and Summerville just finished their Sculpture in the South celebration.  June also means summer vacation and there’s lots for families to do. Be sure to remember Father’s Day on June 15th.     The Charleston Museum has plenty of fun in store for youngsters. Kidstory will feature the subcontinent of India, as part of the hands-on “Around the World” exhibit. The special Wednesday Kid’s Tours will feature museum monkeys, shoes throughout history,  yoga, boat building, pirates, pottery and battles. The “Bugz” around you will be the focus of Family  Fiesta night at Freshfields Village at the on the 29th.  

   The SC Aquarium will let a child bring their dad free with a coupon available on their website on Father’s Day. “Camp Carolina” opens for business with a family sleepover. Bring your sleeping bags on the 24th for a new twist on camping. It’s bug free and you can sleep next to your favorite fish. 

    Piccolo Spoleto will host their Amazing Race, a fun-filled adventure on the afternoon of the 1st. Beginning at Liberty Square, clues will lead families through eight downtown locations featuring mini performances by Piccolo artists.

     Journey Around the World in an Afternoon at Hampton Park with the sounds of Israeli jazz, Russian folk music and a salsa band. There will be ethnic food, international crafts and even hot air balloon rides. The admission is free so plan to stay for the fireworks over the lagoon. The perfect way to enjoy the finale of the 30th Piccolo Festival on the 7th. 

    Need some time to explore in July? The Gibbes and Drayton Hall are offering 5 day Summer Camps. The July 7-11th camp is for ages 4-6. The July 14-18th session is for 7-12 year olds.  

   After establishing a program of medical care, education and conservation research focused on birds, the Center for Birds of Prey will be open for tours. Part of the Avian Conservation Center, the Center will open June 5th  and will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
