I hope everyone had a great weekend and took a few moments to thank a veteran for the right to question, agree or disagree and to do it loudly and legally.  They have given us the right to have the lives we do and the chance to change those lives however we’d like. The flags along Lockwood and at the entrance to Folly Beach were especially beautiful in this great breeze we’ve got.

Out on the creek there were two dolphins having an early meal. I’m trying to track down the scientist doing this dolphin study. You’ll see numbers on both dolphins’ fins. Anyone help me?

Good Morning! It’s a perfect Saturday morning in the Lowcountry and what a great start to a long Memorial Day weekend. The First Annual Fish Fry was held at The Washout this morning. No not food…it’s a chance for surfers to get together with the boards they’ve been making to talk shop, talk story, trade ideas and tell big tales. Pete Kohn was the instigator, you see him here with one of his shapes. Foster, Gunter and Pete at the contest walkover in front of some of their boards.

The joggers and cyclists were out in huge numbers at the beach. The Farmers Market downtown was filled with Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto goers, Spoletians we call them. Lots to do downtown this weekend that for sure! So get out and enjoy this glorious day! I have my high school reunion, my first that I have attended, just don’t know where it is yet! Details, details!

Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto have hit Charleston! Two friends from James Island arrived with guitars in hand for a couple of weeks in town. Rick Smith grew up next door to me in the Terrace. He and brother Steve were the nucleus of a rock and roll band, The Shoresmen. They’d practice in their garage and boy! was I the envy of teenage girls everywhere.  They went on to form the High Price Spread when music got a little more psychedelic. They were regulars at Alice’s Underground on Folly Beach where McKevlin’s Surf Shop is now. It was converted from a bowling alley. They left for California and did well in the music industry.

Rick now lives in Hawaii and is the driving force behind the Honolulu Blues Project. He was with his sister, Candace, at Art’s Bar and Grill where he sat in with Jay Vane, a hot local drummer. Candace runs a major recording studio and lives in LA. I haven’t seen her since she was about 18 and I swear she looks the same. They’ll be around for another week if you want to track them down.

Boy, trying to keep up with technology is a full time job. I’m looking for a new computer and if I wasn’t confused before I went shopping, I am now.  I have very specific requirements, or maybe I should call them desirements on my list and trying to get most of them in one package is beginning to look like a lost cause. But I’ll keep on hunting, I know the perfect unit is there somewhere! Wish me luck!

Welcome to Monday in the Lowcountry. Our good friends visited from Nova Scotia yesterday on the way to golf in Hilton Head. It was so much fun to show off the Lowcountry and a great excuse to fire up at pot of Frogmore Stew. The weather was perfect and the cool breeze on the porch made the day even better.

Speaking of perfect weather, I heard that a  Holland America cruise ship stopped by the cruise ship terminal downtown yesterday for a day of shopping and sightseeing. Carnival Cruise Lines will set up housekeeping here tomorrow with the arrival of the first of their weekly dockings. If you’re looking for an easy getaway, look no farther than the end of Market Street.

Here’s a shot of another nautical visitor to Shelter Cove marina in HHI from our friend Chip. A beauty!

There’s alot of activity heating up this week in the area. Here’s a peek:

Good news on the travel page today. Southwest Airlines is now going to visit us. We’ll be able to travel more reasonably and so will our bags! That’s always a plus.

Looking forward to the citrus crop in December. The trees flowered and our yard smelled heavenly. The trees are full of tiny fruit. I found this photo of the fruit at the end of the last year.

Mother’s Day 2010

Happy Mother’s Day to all!

I found this in my paperwork when I was moving my office. It never fails to move me. So here is a small gift from my second best friend, Louie, the Dalmation. Thanks to the unknown author.

The Ten Commandments for Pet Owners

1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Do not break my spirit with your temper, though I will always forgive you. Your patience will teach me more effectively.

3. Please have me spayed or neutered.

4. Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for your kindness than mine. Don’t be angry with me for long, and don’t lock me up as punishment. After all, you have your job, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you.

5. Speak to me often. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when it’s speaking  to me. Your voice is the sweetest sound I ever hear, as you must know by my enthusiasm whenever I hear your footsteps.

6.Take me in when it is cold and wet. I’m a domestic animal and am no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask for little more than your gentle hands petting me. Keep my bowl filled with water. Feed me good food so that I may stay well to romp and play and do your bidding. By your side I stand ready, willing and able to share my life with you, for that is what I live for.I’ll never forget how well you’ve treated me.

7. Don’t hit me. Remember, I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something could be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I’ve been out in the sun too long or my heart may be getting weak.

9. Take care of me when I get old, for you will grow old, too.

10. When I am old or no longer in good health, please do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having fun. Just see to it that my trusting life is taken gently. And be with me on that difficult journey when it is time to say goodbye.  Never say ‘I just can’t bear to watch.’  Everything is easier for me when you are with me. I will leave this earth knowing with my last breath that my fate was always  safest in you hand. I love you.
