My brother Tom sends me things he finds on the internet. These are not chain letters or mushy videos, although puppies and small animals sometimes enter into the picture. He is a science guy, so his offerings are things like the periodic table put to music  and the evolution of women in art, both were pretty darn amazing.

Sometimes, I figure he just has too much time on his hands. But I always open them because they are fascinating. So in honor of the end of the Spoleto Festival, here is an amazing dance troupe courtesy of you tube and my brother Tom.

Enjoy! If the music is not for you, advance to 1:48 for a take on a classic.

A friend of ours from years ago, Ed Andrews, is a realtor out in Telluride, Colorado. He took some photos there on Sunday and they were so cool (literally) looking I thought I’d share them. They’ve gotten snow in the higher elevations, as you can see. It feels better just to see these.

Thanks Ed, I needed that.

Looks like summer is here with a vengeance. The fiorecast for today is 99 with slightly cooler (96 and 95) behind it.  Sprinklers are running and the tropical plants are the one thing thriving. Our neighbors brought us some fresh mahi from their offshore fishing excursion. What a fine dinner with fresh SC corn and tomatoes. Our thanks to the Wilsons.

I can’t think of anything more irresponsible than the Senate going home for a vacation without renewing the Federal Flood Insurance Program. The biggest irony (and the saddest) is that the program was allowed to expire on the first day of hurricane season. You would think that as self-serving as most politicos are, they would jump at the opportunity to lead the charge to protect their constituents. To do so without controversy seems to be a PR dream come true.

While everyone seems to think that it doesn’t affect them, consider if you are one of the thousands of people whose insurance carrier decided to move out of the market or just drop certain policies in those markets. It is not just the folks trying to buy a home needing flood insurance who are in trouble. If your policy is up for renewal…guess what. It can’t and you are without coverage. Your lender requires you to have flood insurance….where does that leave you? In alot of trouble. And it’s not just folks on the coast that are in a tight spot. We forget there are locations inland that are devasted by flooding. The news from Arkansas has brought that home to us this week.

I know I’m on my soapbox, but I think that Seantors who would go home without taking care of this important piece of business need to be returned to the world that the rest of us have to live in. Maybe then they’ll learn what we know only too well. We don’t go home til our work is done.  That’s how it is in the real world.

A beautiful morning but hot, hot, hot. Charleston is full of visitors, here to see Spoleto, visit the beaches or to buy homes, Yeah! Our friend Rick Smith from the Honolulu Blues Coop left to go back home to Hawaii.

Our friend, Will Allison, surfboard shaper and owner of Allison Surfboards, stopped by after delivering a load of boards to McKevlin’s Surf Shop. Will brought his new shape, a Carolina Classic, with him.

Then there’s my new listing at 2112 Breezy Pointe Drive in The Pointe, Rivertowne Country Club. Tidal creek and rellly nice, get it while it’s hot!

Rick spent some time entertaining us on the porch.

Summer is certainly here! It’s 4:30 in the afternoon and the computer says it’s 88 at Folly Beach. I believe it. But we get a wonderful sea breeze that helps alot. It’s howling right now. The weatherman said big storms moving in this afternoon, but so far, so good. One thing that’s good about hot weather. The beach flowers pop out. The pink oleanders and the buttercups were smiling today.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and took a few moments to thank a veteran for the right to question, agree or disagree and to do it loudly and legally.  They have given us the right to have the lives we do and the chance to change those lives however we’d like. The flags along Lockwood and at the entrance to Folly Beach were especially beautiful in this great breeze we’ve got.

Out on the creek there were two dolphins having an early meal. I’m trying to track down the scientist doing this dolphin study. You’ll see numbers on both dolphins’ fins. Anyone help me?

Good Morning! It’s a perfect Saturday morning in the Lowcountry and what a great start to a long Memorial Day weekend. The First Annual Fish Fry was held at The Washout this morning. No not food…it’s a chance for surfers to get together with the boards they’ve been making to talk shop, talk story, trade ideas and tell big tales. Pete Kohn was the instigator, you see him here with one of his shapes. Foster, Gunter and Pete at the contest walkover in front of some of their boards.

The joggers and cyclists were out in huge numbers at the beach. The Farmers Market downtown was filled with Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto goers, Spoletians we call them. Lots to do downtown this weekend that for sure! So get out and enjoy this glorious day! I have my high school reunion, my first that I have attended, just don’t know where it is yet! Details, details!

Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto have hit Charleston! Two friends from James Island arrived with guitars in hand for a couple of weeks in town. Rick Smith grew up next door to me in the Terrace. He and brother Steve were the nucleus of a rock and roll band, The Shoresmen. They’d practice in their garage and boy! was I the envy of teenage girls everywhere.  They went on to form the High Price Spread when music got a little more psychedelic. They were regulars at Alice’s Underground on Folly Beach where McKevlin’s Surf Shop is now. It was converted from a bowling alley. They left for California and did well in the music industry.

Rick now lives in Hawaii and is the driving force behind the Honolulu Blues Project. He was with his sister, Candace, at Art’s Bar and Grill where he sat in with Jay Vane, a hot local drummer. Candace runs a major recording studio and lives in LA. I haven’t seen her since she was about 18 and I swear she looks the same. They’ll be around for another week if you want to track them down.
