April Sports Scene

      Major events in the Holy City mean lots of  things to do and see. The Cooper River Bridge Run is more than an internationally hailed 10K. There’s the walk of course, both held on the 4th. The Children’s event is held at Hampton Park. Events for toddlers to 13 year olds are celebrated on the 3rd. There’s even the new Gerber Stroller event. The Wheelchair division will begin on the 4th at  7:10. At 8 am, the 10K run will begin. The Finish party will be held in Marion Square.

     If that’s not enough, on Sunday there‘s the After the Bridge Run Ride. The 30, 50, 73 or 100 mile courses will begin at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island.

        The next biggie is the Family Circle Cup also at Daniel Island the 11th through the19th. Some of the biggest names in women’s tennis will be on hand for the nine day festival.

     Charleston Race Week (16th-19th) is an annual premiere regatta for One Design boats 21′-70′ LOA and IRC and PHRH boats 22′-70′. Not only great viewing but there are shore side events for the public at the Race Village. Outside Magazine didn’t call Charleston ‘America’s Dream Town’ for nothing!

     Looking for something a little more low key? How about the East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival at James Island County Park the 17th -19th. Lectures, classes, on water demos are directed at paddlers of all experience levels.

     Is golf your game? The 20th Annual John Tupper Flowertown Golf Classic is set for the 24th, where else but Summerville! Then, on the 25th, Legend Oaks will host their tournament. The Junior Service league of Summerville is busy! If that’s not enough, the SPINX Charity Golf Tournament in Greenville will be the 27th.

    The Charleston Digital Corridor’s iFive:K 2009 will begin and end at the Charleston Maritime center. The 6:30 pm race will be held on Thursday, the 16th.

     Kiawah will celebrate Earth Day with Beach Fun Run on the 19th with a 1 mile or 5K (timed event) trek along the beach. Re-purposed t shirts will be given out.
